Venäjän vuonna 2022 alkanut raaka hyökkäyssota Ukrainassa on muuttanut rajusti Euroopan ja Suomen turvallisuustilannetta. Sota Ukrainassa alkoi kuitenkin jo vuosia aiemmin. Maa on joutunut kärsijän asemaan USA–EU–Kiina–Venäjä-nelikon suhteissa, niiden jännitteissä ja geopoliittisessa kamppailussa. Osittain se johtuu Ukrainan omista valinnoista, mutta suurimmaksi osaksi syynä on ollut sen joutuminen suurempien valtioiden ristiriitojen areenaksi.
